2.7.2011 – Proverbs 7:2,3

Proverbs Post #33-

Today I was reading in chapter 7, and verses 2 & 3 jumped out to me today.  They say:

7:2 Keep my commands so that you may live,
and obey my instruction as your most prized possession.
7:3 Bind them on your forearm; write them on the tablet of your heart.

Are you helping your children memorize scripture? I had a phone call today with a friend that has written a book about the importance of helping our children memorize God’s word.  He has a method to assist parents in this task that is difficult but so very important!

As I was reading today, I was convicted by verse 3. (I included verse 2 for context) Have I bound God’s word on my forearm?  How much of God’s word is written on the tablet of my heart?  I was convicted today that parenting is mostly about the parents and not the kids!  We are responsible to them to help give them a Godly foundation to live their lives on.

Are you helping your kids write God’s word on the tablet of their heart?

I want to challenge you to take up reading the Proverb of the day and the entire chapter as well.  Lord, please help each one of us to keep our focus on things above and not the things of this earth.  Amen.

11.23.2010 Proverbs 23:12

Proverbs Post #26-

Today I was reading in chapter 23, help illness and verse 12 jumped out to me today.  It says:

23:12 Apply your heart to instruction
and your ears to the words of knowledge.

“Apply your heart to instruction” is a great command for kids!  It means to apply your heart or mind in the process.  We see many kids today going through the actions because their parents never teach them the reason for obedience.  Josh McDowell told me, view “Without a relationship they are just rules!”

“Your ears to the words of knowledge” simply means to pay attention.  This is such a struggle with kids because most kids are too poor to pay attention! We need to add “emotional money” to their account by spending time with our kids.

Will you take the time to build a relationship with your child(ren) as a foundation for instruction?

I want to challenge you to take up reading the Proverb of the day and the entire chapter as well.  Lord, please help each one of us to keep our focus on things above and not the things of this earth.  Amen.

11.4.2010 Proverbs 4:23

Proverbs Post #13-

Today I was reading in chapter 4, nurse and verse 23 spoke to me today.  It says:

4:23 Guard your heart with all vigilance, seek

for from it are the sources of life.

“Guard your heart with all vigilance” is a powerful admonition to us.  As I studied this verse the footnotes suggested guard was similar to a prison guard type watchfulness!  Those words are not just a suggestion but a warning.  I thought of an example, link and being a dad, it involved my daughters.  I would not just tell my daughters to look both ways before they cross the road but actually going and carrying them across the road.  This is not just a casual, “Hey, be on your toes” type comment.  We need to be on watch like a prison guard who is literally ready for a potential attack every second, prepared for the unknown.

“For from it are the sources of life” is a little confusing at first glance.  But the meaning is that our heart is the “starting point” of us.  In other words, what is in our heart will flow from us!  If we fill our heart with earthly desires then we will try to fill that void with earthly treasure (cars, homes, money, people).  If we fill our heart with God then He will fill that void.

Are you guarding your heart?

I want to challenge you to take up reading the Proverb of the day and the entire chapter as well.  Lord, please help each one of us to keep our focus on things above and not the things of this earth.  Amen.
