2.14.2011 Proverbs 14:31

Proverbs Post #35-

Today I was reading in chapter 14, and verse 31 jumped out to me today.  It says:

14:31 The one who oppresses the poor insults his Creator,
but whoever shows favor to the needy honors Him.

Am I really using this verse on Valentine’s Day? Yes, I am. This is the day we set aside every year to honor our loved, and hopefully esteemed, spouse(if you are married). I hope you are able to spend time with your spouse as I could  last night for dinner.

I find I am able to show favor to my wife, daughters, friends and family (most of the time), but I struggle with helping the needy. I am pretty sure I do not oppress anyone (my daughters are too young to disagree yet) but showing favor is difficult.  I have the tendency to look the other way or “not see someone” rather than help. Am I oppressing the poor? No, but I am convicted that I am not as effective as I could be in showing favor to the needy and, therefore, not honoring God!

Are you insulting our Creator or honoring God?

I want to challenge you to take up reading the Proverb of the day and the entire chapter as well.  Lord, please help each one of us to keep our focus on things above and not the things of this earth.  Amen.

10.29.10 Proverbs 29:13 –

Proverbs Post #9-

Today I was reading in chapter 29, cheap and verse 13 spoke to me today.  It says:

29:13 The poor person and the oppressor(creditor and debtor) have this in common:

the Lord gives light to the eyes of them both.

In other words, viagra buy we all have something in common.  And what is that?  In spite of our circumstances we receive our life from God.  My wife cleans houses so our daughters can attend a Christian school.  Today, see as she was cleaning she was introduced to visitors in the home.  The visitors did not even acknowledge her!

As the second half of the verse says, God has given each of life and in His eyes He desires to have a personal relationship with Him.  When was the last time you judged someone because the type of clothes they were wearing, the kind of car they were driving, where they worked or one of a hundred things that differentiate us from another?  Money has a way of encouraging our perceptions also.

Do you place value on someone because of how they look?

I want to challenge you to take up reading the Proverb of the day and the entire chapter as well.  Lord, please help each one of us to keep our focus on things above and not the things of this earth.  Amen.

10/19/10 – Proverbs 19:17

Proverbs Post #1-

I have been reading through the book of Proverbs for most of the last four years.  I followed the path many have when reading this book, by reading the chapter that matches the day of the month.  I am going to attempt to write daily, on a verse that speaks to me as I read.  Today I was reading in chapter 19, since it is the 19th day of the month, and verse 17 struck me today.  It says:

Proverbs 19:17 The one who is gracious to the poor lends to the Lord,

and the Lord will repay him for his good deed.

Several things stuck out in my mind as I read this verse.  The first is, we have a tendency to insulate ourselves from the realities of the world.  I wonder, how many people actually are in a position or put themselves in a position to help someone who is poor?  Think about your life for a minute.  When was the last time you gave someone (who was poor) money to eat lunch or buy groceries, paid someone’s utility bill or donated clothing to your local mission?

The second is the promise of repayment.  The Lord “will” is a powerful statement because God always fulfills His promises.  I want to caution those who read this and think “If I give to the poor God will give me a bunch of money!”  The repayment is not specified in this verse.  We do not know if it is an earthly reward or a heavenly reward.  But one thing I do know, I want whatever kind of blessing my God is willing to give me!

I want to challenge you to take up reading the Proverb of the day and the entire chapter as well.  Lord, please help each one of us to keep our focus on things above and not the things of this earth.  Amen.
